Description
La Posada Hotel was built in 1930 as a railroad hotel and depot, and saw many famous guests as well as railroad and automobile travelers during its heyday. The hotel was closed in 1957 due to declining use and maintenance costs. Over time, the city of Winslow fell into economic decline and downtown Winslow had almost no businesses.
In 1997, La Reposada was restored and reopened using Transportation Enhancements (TE) funds and other financing, and served as a catalyst for preservation and reinvestment in the Winslow community.

Goal / Mission
The goal of the restoration of La Posada Hotel was to preserve and restore the hotel as a historic landmark, and to reinvigorate the economy of Winslow, Arizona.
Results / Accomplishments
Since La Posada reopened, it has created over 40 new jobs in Winslow, making it the largest employer in the last ten years. The hotel and restaurant contributed $10,000 to be used for community enhancements, $100,000 in payroll taxes, and $200,000 in sales taxes in 2002. Future plans include refurbishing additional guest rooms and opening a museum within the hotel. The reopening of the hotel has also inspired other community projects, including the development of a park in downtown Winslow.
