G-House: Housing for Transition-Aged Youth 18-24

A Good Idea

Description

G-House is a 20-bed housing program for homeless transition-aged youth (ages 18-24 who are making the transition from adolescence to adulthood). Currently, transition-aged youth are among the fastest-growing segment of San Francisco's homeless population. G-House provides members of this population with stable housing and 24-hour services for up to two years.

Similar to other transitional housing programs run by Larkin Street, G-House residents learn tools to remove the obstacles in their life which threaten a successful transition to independent living. Residents typically enter G-House in crisis mode after experiencing abuse or neglect or after spending time living on the streets. Through the programs offered from Larkin Street, residents develop positive relationships with peers, learn how to care for themselves, and build a plan for the future.

Goal / Mission

To assist homeless transition-aged youth in building the skills necessary to secure and flourish in a stable and independent living situation.

Results / Accomplishments

G-House provided an average of 125 individual counseling sessions per week to youth ages 18-24 in 2009. Over 80% of G-House residents accessed employment services, and 75% of youth without a high school diploma or GED accessed education services. Among youth who exited the program, 82% transitioned to stable housing.
