Drivers Under the Influence Intensive Supervision Program
An Evidence-Based Practice
Description
The Drivers Under the Influence (DUI) Intensive Supervision Program (DISP) is a court-based intervention for repeat impaired-driving offenders. DISP is an incentive-based plea program that allows eligible participants to enroll in the program rather than face traditional sanctions. After choosing to join, participants come under the Court's supervision and are required to serve some or all of their confinement time, participate in alcohol and drug monitoring, undergo random alcohol and drug testing, refrain from driving, and make regular court appearances. Participants are electronically monitored and must attend mandated treatment sessions, weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, a victim impact panel discussion, and monthly meetings with a probation officer. Those that meet the requirements of each phase of the DISP plan graduate from the program and the sentence against them is either amended or deferred. Those that are noncompliant with the program requirements are served additional jail time.
Goal / Mission
The goal of the DISP program is to reduce drunk driving among alcohol traffic offenders.
Results / Accomplishments
This program was evaluated using a randomized controlled trial to compare recidivism among DISP participants and a comparison group. The relative risk for DISP participants of re-arrest for DUI was 0.52 (95% CI = 0.36-0.76) when compared to the control group, after adjusting for gender, age, and number of DUI convictions. Relative risk for driving while revoked or suspended was 0.46 (95% CI = 0.34-0.63), and risk for all other convictions was 0.61 (95% CI = 0.48-0.77). Number of prior arrests had no statistically significant impact on traffic outcomes.
